Navigating the Future of Education
Unleash Future Boats and the University of Lübeck’s Pioneering Approach to Challenge-Based Learning
This 2023 article documented the third year of UFB’s challenge-based learning collaboration with the University of Lübeck and the Ethical Innovation Hub. The work connected innovation, education and ethical responsibility and brought students into practical technology questions.

The 2023 programme focused on three connected areas: Artificial Intelligence, the consequences of climate change and leadership responsibility.
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
The AI work included regulatory sandboxes, legislation and trust. Students examined real-world implications of AI and the relationship between technology, governance and public confidence.
Climate Change Consequences
The climate work addressed resilience and mitigation, with particular attention to adaptation strategies and the operational consequences of climate change.
Leadership Responsibility
This pillar encompasses sustainability, pioneers, and New Work. It’s about nurturing the next generation of leaders who are ready to take on the mantle of responsibility in a rapidly evolving world.
Students were able to select topics for proactive work without fixed templates. The format created an extended reflection and advisory environment around disruptive technology.
The surprise expressed by Dr.-Ing. Christian Herzog, né Hoffmann, at our comprehensive approach to leadership responsibility – even after witnessing and participating in some of our most challenging projects – speaks volumes.
IEEE publication
For instance, one of our students internationally presented an IEEE publication, a testament to the effectiveness of challenge-based learning.

In addition to a new course that delves deeper into this concept, we’ve also offered a thesis opportunity.
Student Noah-Art Leinweber took on the task of translating the ethical considerations of autonomous driving on the street to maritime applications. His work examined the validity, practical relevance and lessons of transferring those ethical considerations to shipping. The thesis received top marks.

The 2023 student group
The 2023 cycle included the formation of new student groups and welcomed BASLER AG alongside other companies participating in the cooperation with the University of Lübeck.
UFB team members contributed subject-matter experience according to the topics selected by the student groups.
The collaboration aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals concerning quality education and partnerships and documented UFB’s engagement with sustainability, innovation and ethical responsibility.
The collaboration forms part of UFB’s documented work at the interface of education, applied research and technology development.
The programme connected UFB engineers, researchers, students and external partners around concrete questions arising from emerging technology.
