LUXlife Global Excellence Award: Recognition Beyond the Maritime Sector
In February 2024, LUXlife named Unleash Future Boats
Most Innovative DeepTech Start Up Company – Germany
in its Global Excellence Awards 2023. For UFB, the interesting part was not simply another award.
It was the perspective from which the company had been recognised.

Recognition beyond the usual technology categories
UFB had already been recognised in engineering, mobility, sustainability and innovation environments.
LUXlife looked at the company through a different lens. Its official award profile described UFB in terms of
sustainable water transportation, renewable energy, advanced propulsion systems and energy-efficient design.
That combination mattered because UFB had never fitted neatly into one category. Autonomous vessels require
software, sensors, propulsion systems and safety architecture — but a vessel is also a physical object.
People see it, touch it, enter it and trust it.
Advanced technology was never an excuse for an unfinished product.
Materials matter. Design matters. Manufacturing quality matters. The way engineering becomes an object matters.
LUXlife’s recognition therefore touched a part of UFB that conventional technology awards often overlook:
DeepTech can also contain craftsmanship.

Technology should not merely work. It should become good engineering.
The Global Excellence Awards came from a publication that talks about quality, design, customer experience and
craftsmanship. That made the award unexpectedly appropriate for a company working on autonomous and zero-emission
maritime systems.
At UFB, engineering was always supposed to survive contact with the real world. A system had to function,
integrate into an industrial environment, remain maintainable and become something people could actually use.
The company therefore treated design and engineering quality as part of the technology itself rather than decoration
added at the end.

And then there was Luxembourg
The award arrived during weeks in which UFB’s European journey was becoming increasingly tangible.
Shortly beforehand, Diana S. Engelhard had travelled to Luxembourg on invitation to present
Green Boats Engineering at the first Sustainable Logistics Innovation Event in Mertert.
The official programme presented UFB as an ecosystem around electric autonomous boats and ships,
fully digital harbours and shipyards, with Green Boats Engineering as a vertical focused on decarbonising
the maritime industry. The setting was fitting: Mertert connected maritime transport, logistics and
infrastructure — the same system boundaries UFB had been working across for years.
Diana travelled there to present the company. She came back with something less measurable.
Luxembourg had started to feel less like a destination and more like part of the map.

Some places stop feeling like destinations
Friends were there. New friendships emerged. Conversations continued beyond the formal programme,
and further invitations followed.
Together with Brussels and Switzerland, Luxembourg increasingly became one of those European places
where UFB did not feel like an outsider arriving simply to pitch a technology. The company was welcomed
into a community of people thinking about logistics, infrastructure, sustainability and Europe’s industrial future.
For Diana, that mattered personally as well. Luxembourg became a place she genuinely enjoyed returning to —
beautiful, open, international and close enough to industry and European institutions that ideas quickly became
conversations.
It felt like confirmation that this place would become part of the journey.

Why the award stayed with us
Awards do not define technology. But recognition becomes especially interesting when it comes from a community
that sees a company from a different perspective.
LUXlife saw DeepTech. It saw sustainability. It saw product innovation and design.
And it saw enough of that combination to name Unleash Future Boats the
Most Innovative DeepTech Start Up Company – Germany.
Sometimes an award shows that a technology has begun to travel beyond the community that first understood it.
That is often when a company realises it is becoming something larger than the category in which it started.
