Winner of the 2022 BMWK Innovation Award for Regulatory Sandboxes
In 2022, the Digital Test Field on the Federal Waterway Schlei was selected as a winner of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action’s Innovation Award for Regulatory Sandboxes in the category ‘Insights’ for regulatory sandboxes in implementation.

The award was selected from more than 100 submissions. The Federal Ministry highlighted regulatory sandboxes as environments where innovative technologies and business models can be tested under real conditions while generating knowledge for future regulation.
Regulation became part of the engineering problem
For UFB, this was strategically important. Autonomous maritime technology could not be validated only through engineering. Operating concepts, system boundaries, safety requirements and the regulatory framework had to be developed alongside the technology.
The award therefore documents more than visibility: it records UFB’s test-field work as a recognised example of innovation and regulatory learning under real conditions.
