European Technology — From Autonomous Vessels to Digital Ports
Unleash Future Boats was one of the early ESA Business Incubation Centre Northern Germany companies in Schleswig-Holstein. For UFB, the programme became much more than an incubation programme: it connected maritime autonomy with the European space and technology ecosystem and helped extend the company’s architecture from autonomous vessels towards connected maritime infrastructure.
Sovereign autonomy by design
From the beginning, UFB designed autonomy around a simple principle: the vessel should be able to perceive its environment and make operational decisions on board. Autonomous operation was not designed around permanent remote control or a continuous external connection.
This technology philosophy also had a strategic dimension. UFB deliberately worked with European technology capabilities and, within the ESA ecosystem, with Galileo. The objective was to use European technological strengths and contribute to keeping advanced maritime innovation and know-how in Europe. In UFB’s 2021 development context, this was primarily a capability and resilience choice — before the later European security environment made technological dependencies a much more visible public concern.
European capability without technological isolation
For UFB, technological sovereignty did not mean closing European systems to the outside world. It meant retaining critical technological options, architectural competence and operational know-how in Europe while remaining able to work with trusted international partners.
Then we found the next system boundary
A young ESA network across Northern Germany and Bavaria
UFB entered ESA BIC Northern Germany through the emerging Schleswig-Holstein extension around GATEWAY49. The programme connected the company with the Bremen space ecosystem while its wider management structure also linked into AZO at Oberpfaffenhofen, which managed both ESA BIC Northern Germany and ESA BIC Bavaria. In practice, UFB’s ESA interface therefore reached across the northern programme and the Bavaria / Oberpfaffenhofen management layer.
Public programme records describe UFB as the first GATEWAY49 startup to receive ESA support and later as an ESA BIC Northern Germany incubatee and alumnus.
As UFB brought increasingly digital and autonomous vessels into real maritime operations, a structural asymmetry became visible: the vessel could interact digitally, while many processes at the interface with ports were still analogue.
That observation changed the scope of the work. The question was no longer only how to build an autonomous vessel. It became how autonomous vessels, ports and surrounding infrastructure could communicate and operate as one digital maritime system.
The Digital Port
UFB began developing concepts for a fully digital port environment in which autonomous vessels could communicate directly with shore-side infrastructure and operational systems. Communication, arrival, infrastructure, computing and port processes became part of the same architecture.

Space Meets Ocean
Space Meets Ocean became UFB’s shorthand for bringing maritime autonomy into the ESA technology ecosystem. Within UFB, Diana S. Engelhard introduced the phrase for this maritime ESA context, coordinated the required approvals and had the first corresponding ESA maritime beach flag produced. The phrase subsequently appeared publicly in the presentation of UFB within the ESA BIC Northern Germany ecosystem.

From concept to international collaboration
The Digital Port work progressed beyond a presentation. Canada became an early trusted transatlantic node in this architecture. Canadian technology company AMPD Technologies joined the work, with teams collaborating across Germany and Canada on computing infrastructure, technical concepts and proof-of-concept activities.
This was consistent with the underlying sovereignty concept: retain critical system competence and technological options in Europe while building interoperable relationships with trusted partners beyond Europe.
In 2022, AMPD publicly disclosed a binding Memorandum of Understanding with Unleash Future Boats covering a broader technology collaboration and four computing containers, with a stated value of CAD 1.8 million in anticipated revenue to AMPD. The collaboration included proof-of-concept work around UFB’s autonomous-maritime and Digital Port environment.
A successful ESA BIC journey
The ESA BIC relationship remained part of UFB’s development well beyond the original programme. ESA BIC Northern Germany later featured Unleash Future Boats in its alumni programme and continues to present the company as one of its success stories.
What began with an autonomous technology carrier therefore grew into a broader systems question: how can vessels, European space technology, digital infrastructure and ports work together as an integrated maritime environment? Once such systems entered real operations, the next boundary was no longer purely technical. It became institutional and regulatory — the next chapter in the UFB Journey.
The complete physical Digital Port build-out was not ultimately completed. The underlying technology work, architecture, international collaboration, MoU and proof-of-concept work remain part of UFB’s development history.
