From Prototype to Autonomous Maritime Test Platform
ZeroOne became one of the central technology demonstrators of Unleash Future Boats: a physical platform connecting emission-free propulsion, autonomous maritime systems, electronics and real-world testing. The decisive step was simple: maritime autonomy was no longer only a concept — it existed as a system that could be launched, operated and tested.
Public unveiling and technology partnership
On 17 June 2021, Unleash Future Boats and Würth Elektronik publicly unveiled ZeroOne at the GREENTECH FESTIVAL in Berlin. Würth Elektronik documented its role as technology partner, supporting UFB with electronics expertise, components and development work.
The unveiling also placed UFB inside an established industrial open-innovation environment. Würth Elektronik presented Unleash Future Boats as one of its technology-partner start-ups at the 2021 GREENTECH FESTIVAL. The partner interface included Alexander Gerfer, CTO of the Würth Elektronik eiSos Group, and Thomas Waldmann from Würth Elektronik’s start-up and venture activities.
GREENTECH FESTIVAL founders Nico Rosberg and Marco Voigt also signed ZeroOne during the event. The relevance of this episode is therefore broader than event visibility alone: it documents an early chain of trust connecting a physical UFB demonstrator, an established industrial technology partner and a highly visible European innovation platform.
Launch, test operation and validation
ZeroOne was christened and launched in Schleswig in August 2021. Independent partner documentation describes it as an autonomous high-tech catamaran with electric fuel-cell propulsion based on green hydrogen.
The Federal Ministry of Transport subsequently documented ZeroOne as the technology carrier used in HANNAH on the 42-kilometre digital test field on the Schlei, with Unleash Future Boats acting as project coordinator.
What ZeroOne opened up
Once ZeroOne existed as an approved and operational technology demonstrator, the questions expanded beyond the boat itself: which technological capabilities should Europe retain, how should real-world testing be organised, and how should institutions respond to a form of maritime autonomy that had become tangible? Those questions continue in European Technology and the Institutional & Regulatory Network.
ZeroOne therefore remains the physical starting point of the UFB story: the moment an ambitious architecture became something that could be seen, launched, operated and confronted with the real world.
Viewed across UFB’s development history, the technology partnerships, public validation and institutional relationships built around ZeroOne form part of the broader systems-development track record later carried forward under Managing Director Diana S. Engelhard.
